Mariel Tivoli

Mariel is a Master’s Candidate from Southern Methodist University, completing a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Mariel received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Elon University in Psychology and Human Service Studies. Using an Existential therapeutic approach, Mariel believes that people’s emotional distress is rooted in the universal attempt to make personal meaning of their lives in a world without universally-agreed-upon meaning. Another core belief of Mariel’s is that we also must accept responsibility for our freely-made choices. Finally, no matter how close we might become with other people, ultimately no one else can live in our bodies and live with our consequences; in other words, Mariel believes we must do our own work in order to truly seek out connection with/from others.

“As a counselor, however, I firmly believe that in the face of these limits and the inevitability that all things will eventually end, it IS possible to embrace your life and live it to the fullest. I also believe passionately in the power of connection, so a big part of how I counsel is through the lens of relationship. I view my role as the counselor as more of a guide on this journey rather than someone who has all the answers.”

Mariel works with individuals and couples, specializing in adolescence, young adults, and anyone identifying as members of the LGBTQ+ communities, but is happy to see anyone needing help.

When she is “off the clock,” Mariel enjoys traveling, playing with her Goldendoodle, listening to music, anything Disney, and trying new coffee shops around the DFW area.
